As of June 11, 2018, the Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles will recognize non-binary individuals on Maine IDs. From now until July 2019, individuals who indicate their gender as non-binary will be issued a sticker on the back of their ID that reads: “Gender has been changed to X – Non-binary.” By July 2019 the BMV will update their database and will begin to issue IDs that indicate "X" for non-binary.
In order to update the name and/or gender on a Maine ID, the applicant must submit the following:
- To update the name, a document demonstrating the legal name change, such as a court order. Applicants must notify the BMV of a legal name change within 30 days of the name change.
- To update the gender marker, a Gender Designation Form signed by a licensed provider (a physician, therapist, social worker, or other qualified provider) certifying the applicant's gender identity as male, female, or non-binary.
