To obtain a legal name change in Maine, an applicant must submit a petition to the probate court. There is a publication requirement which can be waived if the applicant is a victim of abuse or is currently in reasonable fear for their safety. (Me. Rev. Stat. tit. 18-A, § 1-701)

As of June 11, 2018, the Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles will recognize non-binary individuals on Maine IDs. From now until July 2019, individuals who indicate their gender as non-binary will be issued a sticker on the back of their ID that reads: “Gender has been changed to X – Non-binary.” By July 2019 the BMV will update their database and will begin to issue IDs that indicate "X" for non-binary.

Maine will issue an amended birth certificate with a letter from a physician verifying that the surgery/treatment has been "completed".
